The Science of Marine Reserves, Second Edition Client: Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) Product: Two versions (U.S. and international) of a 21-page booklet. The booklet presents the latest scientific information about fully protected, no-take areas in the ocean. Services: Waterview Consulting wrote both the U.S. and international versions. We contributed photographs to the U.S. version. Waterview also wrote first edition of The Science of Marine Reserves, released in 2002. The challenge: Accurately summarize a large volume of complicated, new scientific information. Make the material understandable and compelling to non-scientists. Process: We wrote the booklets based on scientific journal articles, discussions with scientific experts, and summaries written by scientists. The project involved working closely with a core team of scientific experts, an international science advisory group, and a graphic designer to ensure that the information was up-to-date, accurate, and compelling. www.gulfofmaine.org Client: Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment Product: Website with thousands of pages, ranging from written content to searchable databases to interactive maps. Services: Waterview Consulting led a major redesign of the Gulf of Maine Council's website that transformed it from a simple brochure-style site to a richly informative and interactive source of information about the Gulf of Maine. Waterview has continued to maintain the site and develop new components for it. We are responsible for everything from simple updates to planning and coordinating development of web-enabled databases and interactive maps to meet users' needs. Our technical partner for databases and maps is Yellahoose LLC. The challenge: Create a new website that conveys the organization's identity and helps accomplish numerous, multifaceted goals. Organize large volumes of information and present it in a user-friendly way. Maintain the site and integrate new features as needed. Process: For the redesign, we conducted numerous interviews to help identify website visitors' needs. Using this information, we planned the navigational structure and content. For this large site, we worked with contracted designers and technical developers. During and after development, we performed usability testing. Since the redesign was launched, we have been available to the Council on an as-needed basis for posting new content. We have also worked with the Council to identify needs and implement new web-based tools, such as the Habitat Restoration Web Portal, Gulf of Maine KnowledgeBase, and ESIP Monitoring Map. Interactive web module: Forecasting right whale births Client: Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS) Product: A web module consisting of several webpages on the GoMOOS website. Services: Waterview Consulting developed the concept of simple, interactive graphics (figures and graphs) that would enable website visitors to learn by doing. We wrote the content, created the graphics, planned the navigation links, and designed the pages. The challenge: GoMOOS wanted to demonstrate how ocean-observing data can be used to predict the number of North Atlantic right whales that will be born. Predictions are made using models of complex ecological and oceanographic processes, which scientists have discovered in the last several years. GoMOOS wanted the webpages to be interesting and understandable to the general public. Process: Waterview Consulting met with GoMOOS staff to determine the scope and goals of the project. Based on scientific journal articles and discussions with academic scientists, we produced text and graphics to communicate the fascinating relationship between ocean conditions and the reproductive success of right whales. We designed the pages on the GoMOOS development server, working remotely from our office. Link: Forecast of right whale births
